  85. Thank you for your interest in Coeli - Electric Planisphere.
  86.  
  87. Coeli utilizes Super VGA graphics via the VESA standard interface to
  88. generate highly realistic views of the heavens anywhere in the world.
  89.  
  90. However, due to the vagaries of 'standards' in the swiftly changing
  91. world of advanced graphics ( which the IBM PC was never originally
  92. designed to handle ), your system as it is currently set up may not allow
  93. Coeli to function optimally.
  94.  
  95. You should be prepared for possible initial disappointment.
  96.  
  97. But have no fear: with some perseverence you will be able to configure
  98. your system's video so that Coeli's skies display faultlessly.
  99.  
  100. You will need a VESA DRIVER in order to do this.

  102. The best universal VESA driver is undoubtedly UniVBE from SciTech
  103. Software.

  105. You may already have a copy of UniVBE - if you're a gamer, you'll
  106. probably have received one bundled with an Electronic Arts title.

  156. version of UniVBE, as Coeli will then be more likely to run problem-free
  157. with your setup, especially if you own a recent Pentium system.

  160. If odd events occur on your screen within the first few minutes of
  161. starting Coeli, don't panic:

  163. simply wait until things appear to settle, and then press [ESC]. If this
  164. achieves nothing and the screen data is completely unintelligible, you
  165. may have to reset your computer by either switching off and on again, or
  166. by pressing [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL].

  231.                     INSTALLING COELI - ELECTRIC PLANISPHERE
  232.                     ---------------------------------------

  234.          Your Coeli package is contained in a self-extracting file.
  235.  
  236.          This file is called COELI377.EXE
  237.  
  238.          Coeli cannot be run straight from HD floppy or CD ROM. To
  239.          install Coeli, just follow these simple steps:
  240.  
  241.          1) first create a new directory on your hard drive from Dos or
  242.          Windows. We suggest you call the directory COELI-3, but of
  243.          course anything will suffice. To accomplish this from the Dos
  244.          command line you would type the following:
  245.  
  246.                 MD COELI-3
  247.  
  248.          In Windows, you would double-click the File Manager icon and
  249.          then select Create Directory from the File menu.
  250.  
  251.          2) Copy all the files from your distribution media into the
  252.          new directory.
  253.  
  254.          3) Switch to the new directory and unpack the main archive
  255.          according to your supplier's instructions (it will probably
  256.          have a .ZIP or .LZH extension).
  257.  
  258.          From the Dos prompt, you might proceed as follows (assuming
  259.          your distribution medium is a floppy disk currently in drive
  260.          A, the supplier's archive is called COELI.ZIP, and your hard
  261.          disk is labelled drive C):

  271.          4) As mentioned, your Coeli package is contained in a
  272.          self-extracting file called COELI377.EXE. Simply run this like
  273.          a normal program from your new directory. All the Coeli files
  274.          will be reconstituted, and you will then be able to delete
  275.          COELI376.EXE from your hard disk, as it will have served its
  276.          purpose.
  277.  
  278.          NOTE: the foregoing steps will not be necessary if you
  279.          obtained your package on a diskette with COELI377.EXE in the
  280.          root directory unarchived. If such is the case, you may also
  281.          have received a program called INSTALL.BAT which should
  282.          completely automate the installation process explained here.
  283.  
  284.          5) If you have not already done so, install your VESA driver
  285.          by typing its name. If it loads without error, you'll be home
  286.          and dry and all you will need to do is start COELI from the
  287.          Dos prompt or from inside your favourite shell. Coeli runs
  288.          under Windows 3.1 too, but more slowly.
  289.  
  290.          Please note that you should always install a VESA driver prior
  291.          to using Coeli. A universal VESA driver may have been provided
  292.          on the same disk volume on which you acquired Coeli. Otherwise
  293.          please see the end of the manual for suggestions on how to
  294.          obtain one. Coeli 3 will not function without a VESA driver!
  295.

  297.          WINDOWS 95 USERS:
  298.  
  299.          There hasn't been much time to check Coeli's functionality
  300.          exhaustively within Microsoft's new operating system. However,
  301.          with a 2 Mb Diamond Stealth graphics card (S3 chipset) and
  302.          UniVBE version 5.3 installed, there don't seem to be any
  303.          problems.
  304.  
  305.          Simply drag COELI.EXE from the Explorer onto the desktop, and
  306.          a shortcut should create itself there with Coeli's own icon.
  307.          If the correct icon doesn't appear, right-click on the new
  308.          desktop icon, select Properties, Change Icon, then Browse.
  309.          While you're about it, go to the Memory tab and ensure 'Auto'
  310.          is visible in all the selection boxes. Check out the Screen
  311.          tab at the same time: Coeli should run as a full screen
  312.          application. Under Program - Advanced, the following boxes
  313.          should have ticks in them:
  314.  
  315.          'Prevent MS DOS-based programs from detecting Windows' and
  316.          'Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary'
  317.  
  318.          If problems occur the first time round under Win 95, take note
  319.          of the resulting error messages, and then start fiddling
  320.          around with the Properties settings until you begin to get
  321.          positive results. The most likely cause of faults will be
  322.          failure to install a working VESA driver...
  323.  
  324.          We recommend that you glance at the manual before proceeding
  325.          further, either the Windows Write version (COELI.WRI), but
  326.          preferably the Ascii version (COELI.TXT).
  327.  
  328.          For example, to access COELI.TXT from Windows, just
  329.          double-click on it under File Manager and it will be displayed
  330.          in Notepad.
  331.  
  332.          To read the same file under Dos, enter the following at the
  333.          Dos prompt:

  338.          The complete Coeli package contains a number of text files,
  339.          all designed to help you get started with the minimum of fuss.
  340.          Have a browse through any item with the .TXT or .DOC extension
  341.          if you've the time. There is even HELP-ME!.DOC for VESA
  342.          problems.

  346.          if anything goes wrong, you can simply repeat the above
  347.          process and try again.

  387.          version is identical in almost every respect to the current
  388.          registered version.

  390.          What sets registered copies apart is the Sky Quiz, total
  391.          personalization, and the complete absence of reminder screens.
  392.          A not insignificant side-benefit will be the capacity to load
  393.          up to a thousand more stars: they will occupy the bytes
  394.          currently taken up with reminders, registration routines, and
  395.          file-checks!
