===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================
I M P O R T A N T !
---------------------
Thank you for your interest in Coeli - Electric Planisphere.
Coeli utilizes Super VGA graphics via the VESA standard interface to
generate highly realistic views of the heavens anywhere in the world.
However, due to the vagaries of 'standards' in the swiftly changing
world of advanced graphics ( which the IBM PC was never originally
designed to handle ), your system as it is currently set up may not allow
Coeli to function optimally.
You should be prepared for possible initial disappointment.
But have no fear: with some perseverence you will be able to configure
your system's video so that Coeli's skies display faultlessly.
You will need a VESA DRIVER in order to do this.
The best universal VESA driver is undoubtedly UniVBE from SciTech
Software.
You may already have a copy of UniVBE - if you're a gamer, you'll
probably have received one bundled with an Electronic Arts title.
If you don't, it can be obtained easily from the following sources:
The Public Domain and Shareware Library (PDSL)
Winscombe House
Beacon Road
Crowborough
East Sussex
TN6 1UL
United Kingdom
Just ask for disk number 003813, where it will be found among
several other graphics utilities. PDSL's catalogue describes
it as the Universal Vesa VBE v.4.3, 'a small TSR providing the
latest VESA BIOS extensions for most SVGA cards on the market'
Here are some numbers for PDSL:

Fax. 01892 667473
BBS (8,N,1) 01892 661149 / 667090 / 667091
Or, if you have a modem, try one of these:
World Wide Web : http://www.scitechsoft.com
Internet/FTP : ftp.scitechsoft.com
Compuserve : GO VESA (file library 12)
America Online : Keyword VESA
Finally, SciTech Software's own direct mailing address is:
SciTech Software
5 Governors Lane,
Suite D
Chico, CA 95926
USA
Tel. (orders only) : 800-4UNIVBE
: 800-486-4823
Main & Technical Support: 916-894-8400
Fax 510-208-8026
We would urge you, in any case, to try and obtain the very latest
version of UniVBE, as Coeli will then be more likely to run problem-free
with your setup, especially if you own a recent Pentium system.
If odd events occur on your screen within the first few minutes of
starting Coeli, don't panic:
simply wait until things appear to settle, and then press [ESC]. If this
achieves nothing and the screen data is completely unintelligible, you
may have to reset your computer by either switching off and on again, or
by pressing [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL].
You should then consult the following guides included with your Coeli
package:
COELI.TXT and HELP-ME!.DOC
It will also be a good idea to read through any documentation provided
with your VESA driver. Good Luck!

===== Installation =====================================
INSTALLING COELI - ELECTRIC PLANISPHERE
---------------------------------------
Your Coeli package is contained in a self-extracting file.
This file is called COELI377.EXE
Coeli cannot be run straight from HD floppy or CD ROM. To
install Coeli, just follow these simple steps:
1) first create a new directory on your hard drive from Dos or
Windows. We suggest you call the directory COELI-3, but of
course anything will suffice. To accomplish this from the Dos
command line you would type the following:
MD COELI-3
In Windows, you would double-click the File Manager icon and
then select Create Directory from the File menu.
2) Copy all the files from your distribution media into the
new directory.
3) Switch to the new directory and unpack the main archive
according to your supplier's instructions (it will probably
have a .ZIP or .LZH extension).
From the Dos prompt, you might proceed as follows (assuming
your distribution medium is a floppy disk currently in drive
A, the supplier's archive is called COELI.ZIP, and your hard
disk is labelled drive C):
COPY A:\*.* C:\COELI-3 ( copy from floppy )
CD C:\COELI-3 ( switch to new dir)
PKUNZIP COELI.ZIP ( unpack archive )
4) As mentioned, your Coeli package is contained in a
self-extracting file called COELI377.EXE. Simply run this like
a normal program from your new directory. All the Coeli files
will be reconstituted, and you will then be able to delete
COELI376.EXE from your hard disk, as it will have served its
purpose.
NOTE: the foregoing steps will not be necessary if you
obtained your package on a diskette with COELI377.EXE in the
root directory unarchived. If such is the case, you may also
have received a program called INSTALL.BAT which should
completely automate the installation process explained here.
5) If you have not already done so, install your VESA driver
by typing its name. If it loads without error, you'll be home
and dry and all you will need to do is start COELI from the
Dos prompt or from inside your favourite shell. Coeli runs
under Windows 3.1 too, but more slowly.
Please note that you should always install a VESA driver prior
to using Coeli. A universal VESA driver may have been provided
on the same disk volume on which you acquired Coeli. Otherwise
please see the end of the manual for suggestions on how to
obtain one. Coeli 3 will not function without a VESA driver!
WINDOWS 95 USERS:
There hasn't been much time to check Coeli's functionality
exhaustively within Microsoft's new operating system. However,
with a 2 Mb Diamond Stealth graphics card (S3 chipset) and
UniVBE version 5.3 installed, there don't seem to be any
problems.
Simply drag COELI.EXE from the Explorer onto the desktop, and
a shortcut should create itself there with Coeli's own icon.
If the correct icon doesn't appear, right-click on the new
desktop icon, select Properties, Change Icon, then Browse.
While you're about it, go to the Memory tab and ensure 'Auto'
is visible in all the selection boxes. Check out the Screen
tab at the same time: Coeli should run as a full screen
application. Under Program - Advanced, the following boxes
should have ticks in them:
'Prevent MS DOS-based programs from detecting Windows' and
'Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary'
If problems occur the first time round under Win 95, take note
of the resulting error messages, and then start fiddling
around with the Properties settings until you begin to get
positive results. The most likely cause of faults will be
failure to install a working VESA driver...
We recommend that you glance at the manual before proceeding
further, either the Windows Write version (COELI.WRI), but
preferably the Ascii version (COELI.TXT).
For example, to access COELI.TXT from Windows, just
double-click on it under File Manager and it will be displayed
in Notepad.
To read the same file under Dos, enter the following at the
Dos prompt:
TYPE COELI.TXT |MORE
The complete Coeli package contains a number of text files,
all designed to help you get started with the minimum of fuss.
Have a browse through any item with the .TXT or .DOC extension
if you've the time. There is even HELP-ME!.DOC for VESA
problems.
Please make a backup copy of your distribution disk so that,
if anything goes wrong, you can simply repeat the above
process and try again.
If you have serious installation problems, do not hesitate to
get in touch.

-------------------------
After a suitable evaluation period, you are urged to consider
registering Coeli. There are many benefits, not least of which
will be a sensation of warm altruism accompanied by a clear
conscience.
The program as it stands is not 'crippled'. The shareware
version is identical in almost every respect to the current
registered version.
What sets registered copies apart is the Sky Quiz, total
personalization, and the complete absence of reminder screens.
A not insignificant side-benefit will be the capacity to load
up to a thousand more stars: they will occupy the bytes
currently taken up with reminders, registration routines, and
file-checks!
In return for your registration* and any suggestions or
criticisms you might have, Swimming Elk Software will send you
a personal (dedicated) copy of the latest version of Coeli
with the initial observer slot pre-programmed with your name,
home location and startup preferences. It will arrive complete
with the integral Sky Quiz. Thenceforth, you will be advised
of major Coeli updates and be uniquely eligible for our
exclusive offers. You may also contact us by mail at any time
after registration with problems and queries concerning the
inner workings of Coeli.
Swimming Elk Software welcomes any pre-registration enquiries
you might have, even if their sole motive is to confirm to
yourself that we actually exist. A simple postcard or e-mail
with your name and address will suffice to get you a reassuring
reply.
We undertake to answer ALL Coeli-related correspondence, whether
it concerns registration or not.
Payment Alternatives
----------------------
* Registering Coeli costs 12 pounds sterling.
Payment might be in the form of a sterling cheque drawn on a
UK bank (made out to R.Hughes), International Postal Money
Order, IRCs, credit card via PsL, or even the equivalent at
present rates in your own hard currency. But sterling is the
preferred tender, and can be obtained at most banks.
Regrettably, we must charge a handling fee of 5 UK pounds or
its equivalent IF payment is non-sterling currency or IMO,
bringing the total to 17 pounds at the current exchange rate
in whatever other tender you decide to send. For example, this
would amount to $26 U.S.
If paying by PERSONAL CHECK, as opposed to banker's check, in
non-sterling currency, please add another $3 U.S., bringing
the total to $29 U.S. It costs us more in bank charges to
handle these items.
This also applies to orders by CREDIT CARD via PsL (see below
for more details)
A final alternative is 90 (ninety) Finnish marks, to which
handling need not be added if payment is in cash or any cheque
drawn is on a Finnish bank.
If you wish to make an electronic transfer of funds (hard
currency), please take note of the following account details:
1) National Westminster Bank
PO Box 2403
8-11 Pavilion Buildings
Brighton BN1 1DP
United Kingdom
Sorting code 60-30-09
Account no. 00435465
Account holder R.W.J.Hughes
2) Merita Pankki OY
1519 Lahti-Aleksi 5
Lahti
Finland
Account no. 151950-15736
Account holder Roger Hughes
If you decide to make an electronic transfer of funds to our
Finnish bank account, you may also e-mail your completed
registration form to our Internet address (attached, for
example, using MIME). This is by far the fastest method of
obtaining your registered copy of Coeli, since we have online
banking here. We will of course check for the arrival of funds
the moment we receive your e-mailed form.
Order by CREDIT CARD via PsL

You can also mail credit card orders to PsL at P.O.Box 35705,

4A) 90 Suomen markkaa (Finnish marks) 90 Fmk
5A) Credit card order (via PsL) $29 U.S.
Aside from the possible handling fee, all else (postage, media
etc) is included.
You have only to press the [r] key, and a registration
facility is available from within Coeli itself. Here, you may
set out your preferences for a personalized copy, enter
comments and criticisms, and prepare/print out a registration
form.
Alternatively, you could simply fill out and then print
REGISTER.FRM, which should be amongst the files you received
with Coeli. If you cannot find this, a simple letter along
with your registration will suffice. ( Don't forget to include
any preferences you may have for personalization! Only the
most unreasonable requests are refused...)
We recognise that in these times many cannot afford even
shareware prices, particularly students, state pensioners,
and the unemployed. If you happen to find yourself in one of
these groups, simply include a signed declaration to the
effect, and enclose just HALF THE REGISTRATION FEE. We will
consider it encouragement, pure and simple, and be honoured to
serve you.
Thank you.
